They say one is the loneliest number. But one can be truly extraordinary. It just takes one person to say I can. One person to say I will. One person to take a single step to launch an idea or take an action that can change the world. One dollar doesn't seem like very much these days. Indeed, one dollar by itself doesn't get us very far. But take one dollar from many sources, add them together and all of a sudden those individual dollars combine to become a force for change.
There is an extraordinary organization called Sit Stay Read that is tackling the problem of child literacy with a unique, outside-the-box idea. They use dogs to help children learn to read!!
There certainly is no creature more accepting and less judgemental than a dog. A child struggling to read doesn't fear being teased or reprimanded by a dog. On the contrary, dogs put children at ease. They shower them with love and affection creating a perfect environment for learning. Working with the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Center For Literacy, Sit Stay Read has created a structured and thoughtful program that currently reaches over 400 struggling 2nd to 4th graders in Chicago public schools with documented results. It is the dream of Sit Stay Read to help more children in the Chicago area improve their reading skills and to one day help create similar programs throughout the country. Using the bond between people and their pets, they are helping to improve the quality of children's lives and, indeed, to help give them a brighter future.
Sit Stay Read exemplifies our Maddie's Corner vision and mission. From now until the end of March, Maddie's Corner is having a fundraising drive to benefit Sit Stay Read. All we are seeking is a donation of $1. Of course if you'd like to give more we will be very grateful for the genersosity, but $1 will do just fine. You may donate online or via check/money order made payable to Almost Home Inc./Maddie's Corner, mailed to:
